Using
Tera Term Pro - for Windows
|
Scope
- Tera Term Pro is a free
telnet client (software) that words on Windows-based
PCs.
- The software is about 1MB in size
and can be downloaded from a variety of Web sites.
- download.com (AKA
download.cnet.com) and tucows.com are two software repositories
that ensure that the software they provide are free from
viruses.
Downloading Tera
Term Pro - 32-bit
- Using your browser, go to
download.com
- Enter "tera term pro" in the
search field and click Click on the above link labeled
teraterm.exe to download TeraTerm Pro to your computer.
- If you are using Netscape
Communicator/Navigator:
- In the "Save As" window:
- We recommend you save
teraterm.exe to your desktop for easy deletion after install.
- In the "Save In" box, pull down
the menu by clicking on the down arrow and scroll up and down to
find Desktop.
- Make sure in "File name:" it says
teraterm.exe.
- Click on Save.
- File will now download, please be
patient.
- If you are using Microsoft
Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher:
- In the "File Download" window:
- Click to select radio button
option Save this program to disk if it is not already selected.
- Click on OK.
- File will now download, please be
patient.
- In the "Save As" window:
- We recommend you save
teraterm.exe to your desktop for easy deletion after install.
- In the "Save In" box, pull down
the menu by clicking on the down arrow and scroll up and down to
find Desktop.
- Make sure in "File name:" it says
teraterm.exe
- Click on Save.
- File will now download, please be
patient.
- Your file should be saved and
seen on your desktop as "teraterm.exe".
- Click on the teratermssh.exe link
above to download TeraTerm Pro SSH Plug-In to your computer.
- If you are using Netscape

Installing Tera
Term Pro - 32-bit
- Make sure all windows, including
your web browser(s) are closed.
- Double click on the teraterm.exe
icon on your desktop.
- A window named "WinZip
Self-Extractor teraterm.exe" should appear.
- In the "Unzip to folder:" text
field, it should already say c:\teraterm.
- Click on the Unzip button.
- This will extract the TeraTerm
Pro install files to the folder called c:\teraterm.
- A new window named "WinZip
Self-Extractor" should appear with the message "33 file(s)
unzipped successfully".
- Click on OK.
- Back on the "WinZip
Self-Extractor teraterm.exe" window, click on Close.
- The install files have now been
copied.
- Open Windows (NT) Explorer, Click
on Start -> Programs -> Click on Windows (NT) Explorer.
- In the left pane, under your C:
drive, find the folder named teraterm and double click on it to
open it.
- In the right pane, find the file
named setup.exe (OR setup with a little computer with a blue
screen next to it).
- Double click on it to execute the
install program.
- On the "TeraTerm Pro Setup
Window", click to highlight English if it isn't already selected
and click on Continue.
- Click on Continue.
- Make sure path reads C:\PROGRAM
FILES\TTERMPRO and click on Continue.
- Click OK to exit setup.
- Close the "TeraTerm Pro" window.
- TeraTerm Pro should be installed.
- Now for the SSH addition.

Using Tera Term
Pro - 32-bit
- On your desktop, double click on
the icon named TeraTerm Pro SSH.
- TeraTerm will load, and the New
Connection window will appear.
- Make sure TCP/IP is selected as
connection type.
- Select the "Host" (server) you
wish. By default, Clarkson's two main AFS login machines,
polaris.clarkson.edu and crux.clarkson.edu are there. If one
of
- these is not the server you are
attempting to connect to, erase the Clarkson server's name and
type the host you wish to connect to.
- Click on SSH under "Service" if
it is not already selected.
- Make sure "TCP Port#:" is 22.
- Click on OK.
- The "SSH Authentication" window
should appear.
- You MAY get another window titled
"SECURITY WARNING".
- If the host or server you are
trying to connect to is a Clarkson computer, click on Add this
machine and its key the known hosts list to check it
- if it isn't already.
- If the machine isn't a Clarkson
computer, please contact your RCC, RCT, or the CIS Helpdesk for
further assistance.
- Click on Continue.
- You may get a window titled
"TTSSH" and says an error has occurred while trying to read a
known_hosts file. The specified filename does not exist. If
you
- do, click on OK. You should be
able to log on normally. If not, contact your RCC, RCT, or the CIS
Helpdesk for further assistance.
- Back on the "SSH Authentication"
window:
- For "User name" please enter your
AFS (UNIX/Polaris) username.
- For "Passphrase", please enter
your AFS (UNIX/Polaris) password.
- Click on Use plain password to
log in if it is not already selected.
- Click on OK.
- You should be logged on properly
in a secure connection. If you need further assistance, please
