Scope

• EBSCOhost also offers a variety of check and entry boxes that provide a variety ways of limiting or expanding a search.
• Limiters are ways of narrowing a search to more effectively target (Precision) your results.
  • Note: Limiters include the use of "field terms" (see the appropriate page)
• Expanders are tools of expanding the search beyond the results you have received with a current search.

Common Limiters

• Full Text
  • Check this box to limit results to records that provide the full text.
• Publication
  • Enter a journal, magazine, or newspaper name in this field to limit results to articles only from that specific publication.
  • You can find out what periodicals are in the database by clicking on the Publications button at the top and searching the magazine index.
• Published Date
  • Use the date fields to search for articles within a specified date range.
  • Create a range by using the pull down to specify the months of the range and enter the last two digits of the year in the entry fields to specify the years of the range.
• Peer Reviewed
  • Peer-reviewed articles are those, usually in academic or professional publications, that the publication's editors have had reviewed by peers in the writer's profession for:
    • Accuracy
    • Validity of contentions or research
    • Quality of methods and research discussed.
• Publication Type
  • Use this pull-down menu to select the type of publication you want results from.
• Document Type
  • Use this pull-down menu to select the type of article that you want.
•  Number of Pages
  • Enter a number in this field to limit results to a specific number of pages in length. Place the < (less-than) or > (greater-than) symbol before the number to search for articles with a specific page length range. For example: to search for articles that are "greater than" three pages in length, enter >3 in this field.
• Cover Story
  • Check this box to limit results to articles that were featured as cover stories.
• Articles with Images
  • Use this menu to specify if you want articles with images or in the Acrobat (.pdf) format.
  • Otherwise, all articles are seached.

Expanders

• The default for searching in EBSCOhost is searching in the major indexes, including:
  • Citation, which includes Title, Author, Subject headings, and other basic indexes on the publication of a document.
  • Abstract
• EBSCOhost enables one to expand searches to cover more of each record.
• It does through the use of a limiter called "expanders"
• Note: Expanders are not available in the Natural Language search page.
• Three expanders:
  • Also search within the full text of the articles
    • Expands a search for your keywords to include the full text of articles, as well as the standard citation indexes and the abstract.
  • Include all search terms by default
    • Requires that every record returned must have all of your search terms. Otherwise, the ones with all the terms will be ranked first, followed by ones that have lesser numbers of the search terms.
  • Also search for related words
    • Expands search and, thus, the range of results to include synonyms and plurals of your term(s).
